With the number of Tier 4 international students applying to come to the UK falling, leading healthcare colleges and universities are cutting fees or offering generous ‘bursaries’ – a posh academic word for discount.
Education providers, already reeling from the government’s rules changes and clampdowns on overseas students and colleges, are now forced to offer more flexible terms to sell their ‘CAS’(confirmation of acceptance for studies) allocations.
The Tier 4 visa changes were slammed this week by MP’s on the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee who said the measures would cost the UK economy £3.6 billion.
The effects of plummeting student numbers are by no means isolated to private colleges. Universities are also experiencing a huge drop in numbers and with the combined effect of the UK local student fees hike some could even face closure or downsizing.
Good news for students
This mini crisis will actually benefit overseas students looking to study in the UK, a leading agent said.
Grant Solomon of UK University Service (UKUS) told Immigration Matters that ‘reduced fees, flexible terms and lower deposits will be good news for students and should help maintain the UK’s position as the second most popular study destination for after the US’.
The points based system makes life relatively simple for students applying for a Tier 4 visa. The online process and instructions are easy to follow and decisions are made within weeks.
University sets up mini campus in private college to cut prices by 40%
In a bid to offer degree courses at more affordable prices, Universities have come up with an innovative private partnership solution by opening London campuses within college facilities.
Lectures are delivered by University staff, who also provide full on-site support for students. Universities are able to discount fees by up to 40% because the cost of running the course on a private campus are much lower.
In another example of a ‘summer sale’ of study places, a leading healthcare college in East London is slashing prices for the last 10 remaining CAS places for international students.
Grant Solomon added:
‘In order to fill the last few places on their 3 Year Graduate Diploma in Health and Social Care Management course, the college has reduced the first year’s fees by £2000.’
The course, which starts in September, is a level 6 diploma course lasting 3 years, which means students will be issued with a 40 month visa.
